Dhaka Office :<\/strong> Over the past eight years, more than 1.2 million investors<\/strong> have withdrawn from Bangladesh’s stock market. The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC)<\/strong> attributes this decline to market volatility, the transition from IPO lotteries to proportional share allocation, and the closure of multiple beneficiary owner (BO) accounts opened under false or multiple identities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Thursday (January 9)<\/strong>, BSEC’s Executive Director, Rezaul Karim<\/strong>, explained the situation. He noted that investors previously opened multiple BO accounts, both resident and non-resident, under different names to gain higher chances in IPO lotteries<\/strong>. In 2021, BSEC replaced the lottery system with proportional share distribution<\/strong>, reducing the probability of receiving shares. Consequently, many investors lost interest in maintaining multiple BO accounts<\/strong> and stopped paying the annual fees, leading to a significant decline in active accounts.<\/p>\n

Declining Number of BO Accounts<\/strong><\/h3>\n

According to data from the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  • In 2016<\/strong>, the total number of BO accounts<\/strong> was 2,929,189<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • By 2024<\/strong>, this number dropped to 1,664,952<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Over eight years, a total of 1,264,237 accounts have been closed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • In 2023<\/strong>, there were 1,756,104 BO accounts<\/strong>, meaning over 90,000 accounts closed in just one year<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Why Are BO Accounts Declining?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    BSEC highlights several reasons<\/strong> behind this trend:

    \ud83d\udccc Lack of New Listings & Low Corporate Profits:<\/strong> Fewer new company listings<\/strong> and declining corporate earnings<\/strong> have further contributed to investor dissatisfaction.
    \ud83d\udccc Global Economic Uncertainty:<\/strong> Factors like the post-COVID economic downturn, the Russia-Ukraine war, and political instability<\/strong> have negatively impacted the market.<\/p>\n

    Positive Developments<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Despite the declining number of individual investors<\/strong>, Rezaul Karim pointed out a rise in institutional investors<\/strong>\u2014a positive indicator<\/strong> for the stock market. He emphasized that BSEC\u2019s ongoing reforms<\/strong> will help restore investor confidence<\/strong> and lead to a resurgence in BO account registrations.<\/p>\n

    While the decline in retail investors is concerning<\/strong>, BSEC believes that increased institutional investment could bring stability to the market<\/strong>. To regain investor confidence, effective market reforms and more new company listings<\/strong> are necessary.<\/p>\n
