Tempe residents will soon have access to ultra-fast internet as Google Fiber announces its 2026 launch in the city. The expansion marks the tech giant’s continued effort to deliver high-speed connectivity to communities across the U.S.
“It’s completely future-proof,” said Will Novak, Government and Community Affairs Manager for GFiber. The service uses fiber-optic technology—thin glass strands that transmit data via light—installed underground and connected to customers’ homes through a router.
However, availability depends on infrastructure and local partnerships. “We’re looking into communities that want us there,” Novak explained. Tempe and Mesa have both welcomed the service, with Mesa becoming GFiber’s first Arizona hub in 2024 after former Mayor John Giles pushed for improved internet access during the pandemic.
Tempe Councilmember Randy Keating praised the move, stating, “Google Fiber is a perfect match for Tempe. I’m proud of the work that’s been done to bring it to our community.”
Since launching in Mesa in 2023, GFiber has expanded to Chandler, with Tempe and Queen Creek set to follow in 2026. Novak cited workforce growth and adapting to city developments as key challenges, but new infrastructure projects—like those in Tempe’s Warner Ranch neighborhood—will help create a connected “web” across the East Valley.
Currently operating in 19 states, GFiber also focuses on digital equity, partnering with local organizations to promote tech education. In 2021, the company donated $25,000 to Mesa Community College for STEM scholarships, benefiting over 600 students.
Plans start at $70/month, with optional TV, phone, and Wi-Fi add-ons. For details, visit Google Fiber’s website.
