A groundbreaking technological advancement is transforming the life of a blind veteran, giving him a newfound sense of independence. NEWS10 ABC’s Carina Dominguez visited George Knauer at his home to witness firsthand how Meta AI Glasses have revolutionized his daily life.
After being blind for 23 years, Knauer is experiencing a level of vision he never thought possible. With the assistance of Meta AI Glasses, he can now identify people and objects around him. The glasses take snapshots of his surroundings and describe them aloud. “The person is wearing a white sweater and dark-colored pants,” a voice in his ear narrates, providing him with real-time information about his environment.
“You can make a phone call with them, you can send a text message. I was able to look at you, and my glasses told me what you are wearing,” Knauer shared, describing the device as the closest he will ever come to seeing again.
A Life of ResilienceKnauer served as an engineer in Europe from 1966 to 1969 before running his own plumbing business for 50 years. His life took an unexpected turn in 2002 when he suffered a stroke, developed sepsis, and fell into a coma for nearly four months. When he regained consciousness, his vision flickered briefly before complete blindness set in.
Struggling with the drastic change, Knauer found motivation in an unlikely event—his leaking toilet. Determined not to call another plumber, he relied on his expertise and repaired it himself. “That was the turning point,” he recalled. “I told myself, ‘You can beat this.’” From that moment, he embraced his career as a blind plumber, refusing to let his disability define him.
A Life-Changing SurpriseIn December, Knauer visited the Lyons V.A. Medical Center in New Jersey, one of only 13 V.A. centers equipped with a blind rehabilitation facility. Expecting to receive a new computer, he was instead introduced to the Meta AI Glasses—an innovation that would change his life forever.
“Hey Meta, look and see. Tell me what you see,” he commanded. The glasses responded, “I see a person sitting in front of various framed items. I see another person standing behind them.”
The first time Knauer wore them out to a restaurant, he was overwhelmed by emotion. “It was like an out-of-body experience. It was unreal to be able to sit down like an ordinary person, read the menu, and order what I wanted,” he said. He read the menu five times, in disbelief that he had regained the ability to perform such a simple task.
Regaining Confidence and NormalcyBeyond their functionality, Knauer appreciates the sleek design of the glasses. “From what I understand, they’re sharp-looking glasses,” he said. “You feel more normal walking into a store or a restaurant.”
While he acknowledges he hasn’t fully regained his sight, Knauer sees this as a major step forward. “You didn’t quite get your eyes back, but you’re halfway there,” he said, hopeful that his story will inspire others facing similar challenges.
Reflecting on his journey, Knauer joked, “I watched the movie; I just didn’t get to see the ending.”
