Us East Desk: A 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck New England on Monday morning, sending tremors across Massachusetts and parts of the surrounding region. According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the quake hit at 10:22 a.m. about 12 miles east of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Residents from Boston to Springfield reported feeling the shake, with many sharing their experiences on social media and with local news outlets. One WCVB viewer from Newburyport noted that both their family in Dover, New Hampshire, and Portland, Maine, also felt the quake. Other residents reported brief, but intense shaking, with some describing loud bangs and rattling furniture.
In Lunenburg, Massachusetts, a viewer described feeling the vibration under their feet as a pocket door rattled, while others across the region reported similar sensations.
The quake occurred at a depth of around 12 miles, and while no significant damage or injuries have been reported, authorities continue to monitor the situation.
The USGS confirmed that while New England isn’t known for frequent earthquakes, this type of seismic activity is not uncommon in the region. Maine, for instance, experiences one magnitude 3 or greater earthquake annually on average.
