Trump Grants TikTok 90-Day Extension, Seeks Joint Ownership Deal

President-elect Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he plans to issue an executive order granting TikTok a 90-day extension to remain operational in the United States. The move allows additional time for negotiations with China to prevent a permanent ban on the popular social media app.

“I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark,” Trump shared on his Truth Social platform. “Americans deserve access to our exciting Inauguration on Monday and other events and conversations.”

Trump revealed his interest in a potential “joint venture” model, with the U.S. owning 50% of TikTok, though details of the proposal remain unclear.

TikTok went offline for U.S. users on Saturday evening, and the app was removed from major app stores following a law requiring its parent company, ByteDance, to divest ownership due to national security concerns. ByteDance has stated it does not plan to sell, but Trump’s national security adviser nominee, Michael Waltz, indicated there is at least one pending offer.

Waltz, speaking to CBS, described TikTok’s suspension in the U.S. as “extremely problematic.” He confirmed that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had discussed the issue during a weekend call, agreeing to collaborate on a resolution.

“I believe President Trump can craft a deal that ensures TikTok’s future in the U.S.,” Waltz said, expressing confidence in a solution before the president-elect takes office on Monday.
