NYC : TikTok has pledged to continue paying its U.S.-based employees even if a looming legal deadline forces the sale or shutdown of its operations in the country. The assurance was conveyed in an internal memo reviewed by Reuters on Tuesday, as the January 19 deadline approaches.
The short-video platform, owned by China-based ByteDance, employs around 7,000 people across the United States. In the memo, TikTok leadership underscored its commitment to employee welfare, stating, “Your employment, pay, and benefits are secure, and our offices will remain open, even if this situation hasn’t been resolved before the January 19 deadline.”
Supreme Court Deliberations and Presidential Transition
The U.S. Supreme Court is currently reviewing the law passed in April, which mandates TikTok’s sale or a nationwide ban. While initial proceedings suggest the court may uphold the legislation, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has called for an extension to the deadline. His inauguration on January 20 could provide a platform to negotiate a political resolution to the issue.
Despite the uncertainty, TikTok emphasized its proactive approach. “Our leadership team remains laser-focused on planning for various scenarios and continuing to chart the way forward,” the memo noted.
Impact on Operations and Users
The memo clarified that the legislation targets TikTok’s user experience in the U.S. and does not directly affect the employment entities. TikTok also reiterated its commitment to safeguarding both its employees and the 170 million U.S. users of the platform.
If the court does not intervene before January 19, new downloads of TikTok on Apple’s App Store and Google Play will be blocked. Existing users, however, may retain access temporarily, although services are expected to degrade over time as third-party support for the platform ceases.
Navigating a Critical Moment
As the deadline looms, TikTok faces mounting pressure while striving to maintain its U.S. presence. The platform remains focused on protecting its community of users and employees while navigating the legal and political complexities surrounding its operations in the United States.
