BYD Expands Self-Driving Tech, Integrates DeepSeek AI

Corporate News Central Desk: Chinese automotive giant BYD has announced a major expansion of its self-driving technology, integrating AI startup DeepSeek’s software across nearly all its models—including budget cars priced under $10,000. The move sent BYD’s shares soaring 4.5% to a record high in Hong Kong on Tuesday, reflecting investor optimism about the company’s technological advancements.

The company will equip at least 21 models, including its budget-friendly Seagull hatchback (starting at 69,800 yuan / $9,550), with its proprietary “God’s Eye” autonomous driving system. This system offers remote parking and autonomous highway navigation, features typically found in premium vehicles.

BYD Challenges Tesla with Affordable Autonomy

BYD, Tesla’s biggest rival in China and a growing global competitor, is leading a push to make autonomous driving technology more accessible. Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software is available in EVs priced from $32,000, making BYD’s offering a potential game-changer in the market.

“Autonomous driving is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity,” said BYD founder Wang Chuanfu in a livestreamed event on Monday. He predicted that self-driving technology would soon be as essential as seatbelts and airbags.

DeepSeek AI Integration for Enhanced Personalization

The integration of DeepSeek’s AI technology is expected to enhance self-driving capabilities and provide personalized driving experiences. The startup recently gained attention for launching an advanced chatbot at a fraction of the cost of American competitors, underscoring China’s rapid AI advancements.

China’s EV Market: A Battleground for Innovation

China, the world’s largest auto market, has seen intensified price wars among EV manufacturers vying for market share. In 2024, sales of electric and hybrid vehicles surged 40% from the previous year, reaching 11 million units.

BYD led the market with 4.2 million sales, surpassing Tesla’s quarterly revenue for the first time in Q3 2023. The company’s latest push into AI-driven autonomy further solidifies its position as a dominant force in the global EV sector.

BYD’s aggressive expansion of self-driving technology marks a significant shift in the industry, making advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) more affordable and accessible. As the company continues to scale its innovations, competition with Tesla and other global EV giants is set to escalate.
